The Immersive Experience Alliance (IXA) is dedicated to advancing the field of immersive media through accessibility, applied creative research, and educational enrichment. Our mission is to empower creators, educators, and NGO innovators to use immersive and extended reality (XR) technologies for meaningful social impact.

Through filmmaking, interactive media, virtual reality, experience design, sonic arts, wearable technologies, AI and more, our students grow into creative leaders for an evolving world, graduating with the skills they need to tell the stories that matter to them.

Texas Immersive Institute at University of Texas at Austin

Texas Immersive Institute (TXI) explores audience, storytelling and emerging technology through playing, learning, connecting and creating to accelerate the design and development of impactful immersive experiences.

Immersive Media Lab at University of Colorado Boulder

The Immersive Media Lab (IML) is a high-impact teaching, research, and creative practice space designed to advance innovation in extended reality (XR) technologies. The IML equips faculty and students with a suite of XR tools for coursework, research, and workshops. Additionally, the lab fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, enabling the seamless integration of XR technologies into research endeavors, creative projects, and commercial applications.

The Creative Media Industries Institute at Georgia State University

The Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII) in Atlanta equips students with cutting-edge skills in immersive experiences, virtual production, game development, and game design, preparing them for dynamic roles in the entertainment and tech industries. CMII fosters innovation by blending creative talent with advanced technology training, driving media entrepreneurship, and building partnerships across media, arts, and information sectors.

Immersive Media Design at University of Maryland

Immersive Media Design (IMD) offers a unique undergraduate program giving students an opportunity to combine their artistic talents with computer science.Steeped in technology, this program allows students an opportunity to code, create, and collaborate in immersive ways. Innovative researchers, digital artists, computer scientists, and experts in augmented and virtual reality, and human computer interaction, comprise the faculty.

Walking Cinema

Walking Cinema is fascinated with how places hold stories. From the design of doorways to the steam tunnels under old buildings, we leverage guided exploration of places to reveal history, unique characters, and our shared experience.Walking Cinema has worked with cultural organizations and media outlets to produce a unique combination of site-based storytelling, augmented reality, and hands-on learning. We call these experiences “Walking Cinema.” Every day our experiences reach thousands of people around the world.

MIT Open Documentary Lab

Drawing on MIT’s legacy of media innovation and its deep commitment to open and accessible information, the MIT Open Documentary Lab brings storytellers, technologists, and scholars together to explore new documentary forms with a particular focus on collaborative, interactive, and immersive storytelling.In the spirit of MIT’s open courseware and open source software movements, the Open Documentary Lab is inclusive, collaborative and committed to sharing knowledge, networks, and tools. Open in its understanding of documentary’s forms and potentials, the Lab is catalyst, partner and guide to the future of reality-based storytelling.The Lab understands Documentary as a project rather than as a genre bound to a particular medium: documentary offers ways of exploring, representing, and critically engaging the world. It explores the potentials of emerging technologies and techniques to enhance the documentary project by including new voices, telling new stories and reaching new publics.
